SOME
FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT NATIONAL TEACHER'S DAY

When
Mrs. Mattye Whyte Woodridge began to push politicians for a day to
commemorate teachers in 1944, she never realized that it would become a
national holiday. With the help of Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1953 a
National Teachers Day was proclaimed by Congress. Congress then
officially declared an official national National Teachers day in 1980,
however it was to be commemorated only for that year. Nonetheless,
it has continued to be celebrated each year. The National Education
Association has deemed the Tuesday of the first full week in May to be
National Teacher's Day.

If you have kids in school, you
usually give the teachers gifts on the last day of school, or during the
holidays. Gift giving is not required, and they are not always
given. There is one more day where you can honor a teacher, and that
is National Teacher's Day. Remember, this day is to honor all
teachers, so it is okay to give a little something to your old teachers
(if you still keep in touch with them) or to someone you know is a
teacher.
The gifts should provide let them
feel acknowledged for the jobs they are doing in teaching our children and
young men and women in the world. Either give them something to
enhance their skills, or just plainly acknowledges their usefulness to the
community.
