SOME
FACTS AND HISTORY ABOUT NATIONAL MARITIME DAY
In 1933, Congress created National
Maritime Day on May 22nd, to commemorate the first successful crossing of
the Atlantic Ocean by a ship (SS. Savannah in 1819) powered by steam as
well as to all seamen and innovations that have been made towards sea
faring vessels. The President of the U.S. has proclaimed that day to
be National Maritime Day ever since. The scope of the holiday
expanded in 1945, when President Roosevelt also included the commemoration
of the men and women of the American Merchant Marine who helped to support
our troops in WWII where many were hurt, killed and taken prisoner.
