A Bat Mitzvah (Bas Mitzvah) is the celebration of a girl turning into
a woman in the Jewish faith. Upon turning the age of thirteen, a
Jewish female undergoes a religious ceremony in their temple in which
friends and family attend. It was traditionally a religious day,
without the fuss that is made over it in modern times. Over the last
few decade, a party after the ceremony has become commonplace (although
less often than a boy's Bar Mitzvah in the U.S., since they may be getting
a large sweet sixteen party in three more years) . The celebrations could
be very small with a little cake and coffee served, to the extravagant,
even costing more than some large weddings. The traditional gift
given was a pen. If there is a reception afterwards, it is
traditional to give money or a treasury bond equal to the amount of what
you think the meal costs. If you would like to give a gift, the gift
should have some religious meaning (e.g., Tallas (if not very religious),
religious charm), or signify the right of passing into manhood (e.g.,
diamond earrings).
