Although there is laws and customs surrounding the
birth of a boy in Judaism, the birth of the girl has been kept
quiet. However, there has been a custom arising in many Jewish
communities to have a ceremony for the new born girls as well. The
customs may vary, but parents will take their new born daughter to temple
between two to weeks to a month after birth and announce the daughter's
name to the community. This has become a joyous occasion, and if the
family did not have a baby shower, there are likely to be a lot of gifts
provided to the parents and baby.
