The thought of a circumcision may not evoke pleasant
thoughts, but for thousands of years, this ritual has been observed by Jews
all over the world. Eight days after the birth of a boy, he is circumcised
during a religious ceremony by a man called a Mohel/Moil. Many times the
ceremony is held in the synagogue, but it may also be held at the home of
the child's parents. It is not traditional to bring gifts, since
this is a purely religious occasion. However, modern conservative
and reform groups have been giving gifts to the parents or child for this
occasion.
